Storytelling and Wildfire Resilience Gathering

On Nov 5, 2023, this intergenerational talk-story between Hui Mo‘olelo participant Lopaka White and water-woman Aunty Sally Ann Delos Reyes will be interpreted as a work of public art, to be performed on the Great Lawn of the University of Hawaiʻi-Maui College Campus: Excerpt HERE (4 m 12 s) | Full Recording HERE (1 h 45 m 29 s)

Bringing the audio recording to life, which includes stories of the "deep, deep blue," using a rope to navigate to the surface after a deep sea dive, fishing with Aunty Sally Ann's father in Lahaina, crossing the ʻAuʻau channel and more, Maui's Adaptations Dance Theater (ADT) and Hāna-grown musician Stephen Henderson will collaboratively perform live work inspired and composed by the talk-story.

Following workshops with the Kahului community, ADT and Henderson will present this one-time-only work for a live audience as an expression of public art connecting people, place and story through a participatory process. The FREE event is scheduled for 2 PM - BYO lawn chair or blankets!

Contemporary dance and live music performance: Maui's Adaptations Dance Theater (ADT) and Hāna-grown musician Stephen Henderson will collaboratively perform live work inspired and composed by a talk-story with water-woman Aunty Sally Ann Delos Reyes of Lahaina. Raised in Pu'ukoli'i, Aunty Sally Ann was interviewed by fellow Hawaiian Canoe Club paddler Lopaka White through the Hui Moolelo program of Maui Public Art Corps, County of Maui and Maui Historical Society. Artists from all over the world submitted proposals to interpret these stories as a work of public art, and a community panel selected this unique team of artists to bring Aunty Sally Ann's words to life.

Resource Fair for Maui Wildfire Victims: In light of the recent challenges posed by wildfires on the island of Maui, this event will host a dedicated resource fair to provide support and guidance for those affected. A collection of organizations and experts will be on hand to offer information and assistance, ensuring that the community can come together in times of need.
